# Arc payment corridors in Africa — what's actually confirmed

Updated 2026-09-02. The confirmed Circle Developer Grants cohort building African stablecoin corridors, and what a corridor actually needs to work, as of 2 Sep 2026.

> Africa is where a meaningful share of the Circle Developer Grants Cohort 1 recipients are building — reported as 19 startups total, 8 Africa-founded, though no Circle-published cohort list exists and figures conflict across sources. This guide names the confirmed African recipients, attributes every volume figure to the source reporting it, and covers what a corridor actually needs beyond a chain: local liquidity, a licensed payout partner, FX, and a cash-out network. Arc mainnet launches 16 September 2026; none of this is live as of 2 Sep 2026.

## The grant cohort, named and sourced

Circle's Developer Grants Cohort 1 for 2026 is reported by BitKE as 19 startups total, 8 Africa-founded — a figure that differs from other reports and can't be resolved, since Circle hasn't published its own list as of 2 Sep 2026. Treat every name and metric below as company-reported or secondary-sourced, not Circle-confirmed.

**Blockradar** (@BlockradarHQ) provides wallet-as-a-service for businesses. Reported to have processed more than $950m across 182,000 wallets.

> **Builds on Arc:** Non-custodial wallet-as-a-service and gasless transactions for businesses building payment products. · **Role:** Serves · **Category:** Wallets & Custody → Embedded wallets · [Project page](/project/blockradar)

**Kolan** (@kolan_xyz), formerly Hurupay, offers dollar accounts with routing numbers for non-US users, converting balances to USDC. Reported to operate across 50-plus countries, processing more than $100m.

> **Builds on Arc:** Dollar accounts with routing numbers for non-US users, converting balances to USDC, 50+ countries reported. · **Role:** Integrates · **Category:** Payments & Payouts · [Project page](/project/kolan)

**Myaza** (@myazahq) is a pan-African payment network with multi-currency wallets. Reported 25,000-plus registered users and $15m cumulative volume.

> **Builds on Arc:** Pan-African payment network offering multi-currency wallets across 21 African currencies. · **Role:** Integrates · **Category:** Payments & Payouts · [Project page](/project/myaza)

**Payrit** (@payritHQ) is a cross-border mobile USDC wallet. Reported 36,000-plus transactions worth $1.9m for Nigerian users.

> **Builds on Arc:** Cross-border mobile USDC wallet letting Nigerian users transact and cash out in naira. · **Role:** Integrates · **Category:** Payments & Payouts · [Project page](/project/payrit)

**Flezpay** (@flezpay) was described in Arc grant-cohort coverage as building AI-driven smart QR codes that adjust retail prices in real time, with 1,613 integrated stores and $31,000 in monthly recurring revenue reported at the time. Its current public site describes a broader retail-management platform instead — point of sale, inventory, payroll, AI tools — so treat the dynamic-pricing description as the grant-era claim, not a confirmed current product.

> **Builds on Arc:** Reported AI-driven smart-QR retail pricing in its grant profile; current site shows a broader retail OS. · **Role:** Integrates · **Category:** Payments & Payouts · [Project page](/project/flezpay)

**SFx Money** (@usesfxmoneyapp) describes itself as a stablecoin digital bank connecting Turkey, 16-plus African countries, the US, UK, and EU. Its own site does not claim banking authorisation, though — its products route through licensed third-party partners, not a direct license. Reported growth from 300 users (Dec 2024) to 8,800 (Jul 2026).

> **Builds on Arc:** Stablecoin app connecting Turkey, 16+ African countries, the US, UK and EU via licensed partners. · **Role:** Integrates · **Category:** Payments & Payouts · [Project page](/project/sfx-money)

None of these figures are Circle-confirmed — they come from company reporting or secondary coverage (principally BitKE), presented exactly as attributed.

## Yellow Card and Thunes — a different tier, and a distinction worth making

**Thunes** is named directly in Circle's 5 August 2026 press release as a stablecoin payment provider "routing real-world stablecoin payment and settlement flows through Arc" — a confirmed, Arc-specific relationship, directly relevant given Thunes's existing network reach.

> **Builds on Arc:** Named Arc integration partner; uses USDC to speed cross-border settlement in African corridors. · **Role:** Integrates · **Category:** Payments & Payouts → Remittance

**Yellow Card** is confirmed as a partner in Circle's broader Circle Payment Network (CPN), alongside Flutterwave and Onafriq — but no named link between that CPN partnership and Arc itself was confirmed as of 2 Sep 2026. CPN and Arc are related Circle initiatives, not confirmed as the same thing.

## What a corridor actually needs, beyond a chain

A functioning corridor needs four things no blockchain provides on its own.

**Local liquidity.** Local-currency balances to pay out against — a stablecoin arriving instantly on-chain does nothing for a recipient until local currency is there to hand over.

**A licensed payout partner.** Moving USDC across borders doesn't substitute for money-transmission licensing to legally disburse to recipients in each country — usually the piece most likely to bottleneck a corridor.

**FX.** Converting USDC into local currency requires a real foreign-exchange transaction, with a real spread and counterparty risk.

**A cash-out network.** Where the recipient needs physical cash, an agent or ATM network capable of dispensing local currency — infrastructure that predates stablecoins.

Every grant recipient above is attempting some combination of these four — wallet infrastructure, multi-currency accounts, local payout rails — rather than a pure blockchain problem. The chain is a small part of the stack.

## The honest framing on volume

Real-economy stablecoin payment volume globally is estimated around $350–550bn a year, against a much larger gross on-chain transfer figure dominated by trading activity — and a meaningful share of genuinely real-world volume concentrates in this kind of emerging-market corridor, not developed-market treasury adoption. Weigh the figures above accordingly: modest individually, but plausibly closer to real economic use than a comparable developed-market pilot claim.

## Questions

**How many African startups are in Circle's Developer Grants Cohort 1?**

BitKE reports 8 of 19 total as Africa-founded. Other reports give different totals; Circle hasn't published an official list as of 2 Sep 2026.

**Is Thunes confirmed to be building African corridors on Arc?**

Thunes is named directly in Circle's 5 August 2026 release as a stablecoin payment provider routing flows through Arc — confirmed, though undetailed on African corridor specifics.

**Is Yellow Card connected to Arc specifically?**

It's a confirmed partner in Circle's broader Circle Payment Network initiative. No specific, named link to Arc itself was confirmed as of 2 Sep 2026.

**Are the volume and user figures for grant recipients audited?**

No. All are reported by the companies or secondary coverage, principally BitKE — not independently audited or Circle-confirmed.

**Does a stablecoin corridor eliminate the need for a licensed local payout partner?**

No. Licensed money-transmission authorization is still required to legally disburse to recipients, regardless of which rail moves value across the border.
